Now in his eighth year as Buena Vista County Attorney, Dave Patton has had a long history in public service. He holds a B.A. in Political Science from Iowa State University, and has been practicing law since receiving his Juris Doctorate from Drake University in Des Moines, Iowa in 1978. After graduating from law school Mr. Patton worked in a law firm in suburban Des Moines before becoming staff attorney for the Governor's Office of Planning and Programming from 1980 to 1984.
From 1984 to 1991, Mr. Patton practiced law in Virginia, becoming a partner in the downtown Richmond, Virginia law firm of McSweeney, Burtch and Crump, a litigation firm for business and environmental concerns. He returned to his home town of Storm Lake in 1991, where he has been privileged to serve on the city council and many of the local non-profit agency boards. He is blessed with 4 children and a wonderful wife.
During his tenure as County Attorney, Patton has implemented a highly specialized web-based resource for law enforcement designed to track multiple aspects of criminal cases including those parties involved with each case, timing of court mandated events, document management and reporting analysis capabilities. The results of those efforts have promoted improvements in departmental efficiency and savings in administrative costs while aiding with the challenge of increasing caseloads.
In 2009, with the support of the Board of Supervisors, Patton established what has become a 4-person debt collection unit that has collected over $1,000,000.00 in deliquent fines, court costs, and other obligations from defendants in criminal proceedings, resulting in additional income to the county of approximately $466,600.00.
